New Zealanders care deeply about their fisheries and marine environment.

Fisheries New Zealand works to ensure that fisheries resources are managed in a way that provides the greatest overall benefit to New Zealanders.

Working with us means that every day you’ll go home knowing you’ve made a positive contribution to the sustainable management of New Zealand's valuable fisheries resources and their wider marine environment.

Now is an exciting time to join Fisheries New Zealand.  We’re delivering transformational change that will modernise commercial fishing practices and better support sustainable fisheries.

We are looking for a Senior Operational Health & Safety Adviser to join us for 2 years on a fixed term contract until the end of October 2021.

About the role - Kōrero mō te tūranga

This is a brand new role, with a primary focus on strengthening the management of health, safety and wellbeing of our Fisheries Observers.  Our Fisheries Observers are deployed to sea aboard commercial fishing vessels where they collect high quality data, information, and scientific samples, on behalf of Fisheries New Zealand.  Fisheries Observers largely work independently and autonomously while at sea, often in complex and challenging environments.  From time to time you will be required to provide support to decision makers on other matters relating to health, safety and wellbeing across Fisheries New Zealand.

Your vision and organisational excellence will enable our organisation to proactively address critical strategic risks and deliver against its strategic priorities.  You’ll bring a wealth of experience and have relevant qualifications in health and safety.  Sector experience is a bonus.

We need someone who is well versed in building and maintaining successful relationships.  In this role, you’ll get to work with intelligent and passionate people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets across Fisheries New Zealand and MPI, other New Zealand Government agencies, Tangata Whenua, and industry bodies.

We embrace diversity and we encourage flexible working arrangements.
