Senior Māori Engagement Advisor - Auckland

Location: Auckland Wide, NZ, 1010

Company: Auckland Council

  • Drive and improve environmental outcomes for Māori

  • Build relationships with diverse stakeholders

  • Permanent opportunity based in Auckland CBD

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

The introduction of targeted rates to improve Auckland's water quality and the state of the environment are a testament to Aucklanders' commitment towards improving enviornmental outcomes for our region.  This additional investment over the next ten years means a significant expansion in the work programmes of Auckland's Council's Infrastructure and Environmental Services.

We have a great opportunity for a Senior Māori Engagement Advisor to work with senior staff across council to ensure the programmes and projects delivered through the targeted rates incorporate a Māori world view to treasure and protect our environment (taonga tuku iho). This will mean Te Ao Māori concepts such as kaitiakitanga, rangatiratanga, whakawhanaungatanga, whai matauranga and whai oranga are included in the Environmental Services and Healthy Waters work programmes to offer Auckland an integrated approach to protecting and enhancing our treasured environments and waterways.  Be part of a wider cohort of staff across council working collaboratively to achieve a transformational shift for Māori.

You will also support the implementation of the Infrastructure and Environmental Services Maori Responsiveness Plan - Kei hea te kōmako, where will the bellbird sing?, with a focus on significantly improving Māori responsiveness in the Environmental Services and Healthy Waters departments.

He kōrero mōu: About you

Your background will demonstrate strong experience working in a similar communication and/or engagement advisory position ideally within local or central government, an NGO or perhaps a hapu/iwi organisation.

The success of this role relies heavily on your experience in fostering relationships across key audiences in a collaborative and constructive manner, including mana whenua, mataawaka, elected members and other stakeholders within the organisation. You have previously demonstrated your ability to develop a strong sense of kotahitanga, as you guide your stakeholders and provide advice on a range of Māori and council issues.

Experience in the use and delivery of Te Reo and tikanga Māori knowledge systems and paradigms are crucial to this role. With your strong grasp of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and  mana whenua interests within Tāmaki Makaurau, you will be confident in applying your knowledge to both a historical and contemporary setting. It goes without saying that your verbal and written communication skills are top notch.

An understanding of environmental matters and experience working in local or central government or like agencies are desirable.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

This newly created position presents you with the opportunity to champion Te Ao Māori in influencing key environmental outcomes.  You will be part of a highly engaged and supportive team who feel that their work has purpose and that their contributions are valued.  In addition to a competitive salary, we offer training and development opportunities and career progression.  You’ll also have access to a range of fantastic Auckland Council benefits, including discounted Leisure Centre membership and a range of other partnership discounts.
