Sterkinekor Theatres PTY Limited, Primedia (South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape; Africa: Zambia) - 2015 to date

Regional Human Resource Business Partner 

Sterkinekor Theatres is the largest entertainment retailer in South Africa providing film content to all cinema houses for the entertainment of customers. Sterkinekor is a division of Primedia Ltd. which is home to numerous marketing, media and radio companies in Africa. The position of Regional Human Resource Business Partner is based in the Cinematic sector and responsible for the full human resources function in five out of the nine provinces in South Africa as well as in Zambia. In this role I lead a team of 11 managers in the execution of human resource strategies, initiatives and programs to 363 employees.

My role encompassed… 

Effective identification and implementation of required projects

  • Manage and deliver Human Capital and SKT projects within region.

  • Manage execution (timelines, actions, status reporting, status meetings, deliverables, risks & issues, expenditures, etc.). 

  • Monitor and interpret the impact of change initiatives throughout region.

  • Adopt the role of facilitator / driver / leader as and when required. Contribute to the development and/ or approval of HC Policies.

Recruitment and Selection

  • Adhere to agreed Recruitment and Selection policies, procedures and standards.

  • Arrange and facilitate panel interviews as and when required. Personally conduct interviews, reference and other checks when required.

  • Monitor vacancies and adherer vacancy turnaround times. Ensure achievement of Employment Equity goals (C5 grades and below). Train, coach and assess line manager’s competence regarding Recruitment and Selection practices.

  • Ensure all new employees are inducted / on boarded according to the required standard. 

  • Ensure that all new, transferred and promoted appointees are properly trained on the job and are assessed as competent.

  • Quality check employee documentation relating to new engagements, changes in status and terminations.

  • Train and advise managers on correct salary budgets, staffing, documentation and procedure.

  • Ensure timely submission of documents to the payroll and employee benefit department.

  • Monitor and take corrective action on all out of line staff costs (e.g. salaries, overtime, fixed terms, average hours etc.).

 

Performance management practice and implementation

  • Train, coach, monitor and ensure consistent implementation by line managers of the agreed performance management practice and standards.

  • Monitor effective implementation of all performance management actions agreed with line management.

  • Advise on appropriate action to improve and enhance performance and manage poor performance.

  • Ensure proper recording of performance management results on a quarterly basis.

 

Employee Development

  • Facilitate and implement required training interventions to meet targets.

  • Maintain, administer and submit accurate training records.

  • Manage training expenses within allocated budgets.

  • Assist line in formulating the development of personal development plans (PDP’s) for key employees.

  • Make recommendations to the Training and Development Manager regarding improvements or changes to such things as needs analysis generation, training delivery, assessment, optimizing use of IT systems for training delivery, records management, etc.

  • Implement succession planning, in consultation with the Regional Manager & HCBP.

Employee Relations

  • Ensure sound and consistent interpretation and application of all legislation, company policy and procedures.

  • Plan, schedule, train, coach and continuously assess all line managers’ competence regarding Employee Relations practices.

  • Consult with line management regarding grievance, disciplinary, appeals and CCMA hearing outcomes to ensure consistency and best possible outcomes and monitor trends at individual complex level. Evaluate the implications of potential hearing outcomes.

  • Ensure the correct formulation of preferred disciplinary charges. Liaise closely with the employee relations manager regarding problematic cases, expected or actual restructuring /operational requirements, potential industrial conflict/work stoppages/strikes, group grievances, etc.

  • Prepare cases and consult with Employee Relations Manager regarding CCMA and Labour Court matters as applicable.

  • Provide required ER statistics re dismissals, warnings, grievances, CCMA referrals, etc. to the Employee Relations Manager.

 

Budget Management and Reporting on HC Metrics

  • Track and manage expenditure against budgets.

  • Approve payments to supplier’s/service providers and forward to HC Executive for final approval.

  • Provide required ER statistics (e.g.  Dismissals, warnings, grievances, CCMA referrals, etc.) to the Employee Relations Manager. Provide required Training statistics to the Training and Development Manager, including Attendance Records, training expenses and Assessments of Competence.  

  • Provide required statistics to the Talent and Acquisition Manager, including vacancies, talent pools, development plans, recruitment costs etc. Provide a monthly written report to National HR Manager on key deliverables in required format (Steercom Minutes).

  • Provide travel program to National HR Manager and Regional Manager on cinema visit and report back on issues identified.
