Hannah Shand is an artist from the Kāpiti Coast who specialises in detailed animal sketches, particularly New Zealand birds. She creates her realistic drawings using fine tip black ink pens. Skillfully applying different pressures, she carefully renders fine details of the animals’ feathers, fur, skin or scales.
Hannah’s inspiration is drawn from the abundance of bird watching spots, bush walks and incredible scenery near her home studio. Using her art to showcase the beauty and elegance of New Zealand wildlife, she hopes to inspire others to care for our animals. She works with local conservation groups to raise money by selling her art, and promoting the work they’re doing.
Hannah is exhibiting a range of her New Zealand made limited edition Giclée prints in Zealandia throughout July and August. The selection of artwork for sale includes the soaring Kārearea to the inquisitive and cheeky Pīwakawaka.
About Zealandia Ecosanctuary:
Set in the heart of Wellington is Zealandia Ecosanctuary; a biodiverse, groundbreaking conservation site thiriving with native New Zealand birds and animals. Tucked away in Karori and protected by 6.8km of fencing live 18 species of native wildlife that have been reintroduced into the area after being absent from the mainland for over 100 years. With an aim to restore the land back as closely to its pre-human state, Zealandia has helped birds such as the tūī, kākā and kererū become widely spread throughout Wellington. Zealandia brings conservationists, researchers, photographers, artists and the like together to teach and inspire one another.
