 Emergency Call Handler - Christchurch

St John is now looking to increase our team of Emergency Medical Dispatchers working in the Clinical Control Centre taking emergency calls. We welcome applicants from all walks of life who want to provide an outstanding service to our patients.

Based at the Clinical Control Centre in the new Justice Precinct in the Central City, we are close to public transport and carpark facilities - although we are unable to provide car parking.

This is an important and meaningful role in which you will encounter a wide range of calls and the nature of many of these will require a high level of resilience on your part. No two days are the same.

To be successful, you do not require a medical background as you will undergo an intensive training period to enable you to give initial advice and instruction to callers.

We are looking for people with empathy, exceptional communication skills and the ability to gather and analyse critical information quickly. You will need to be resilient too.

There is an expectation you will work an average of 42 hours per week on rostered shifts over a 24/7 pattern of 12 hour shifts - generally two days and two nights followed by four days off.

The full-time starting salary is $48,720, rising to $51,765 when signed off to take calls solo at approximately 3 months, and $55,825 at around one year. You will meet ongoing training requirements throughout your career.

Essential criteria for this role:

  • A minimum typing speed of 40 wpm (this will be tested)

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Ability to work rostered shifts

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Ability to multi-task in a Windows operating environment

  • Excellent health and well-being

The recruitment process is:

  1. Initial assessment through a phone interview - a Talent Sourcing Advisor or someone from the team will give you a call to assess your suitability based on the above essential requirements.

  2. You will then be asked to attend an information evening to be held on Wednesday, 22nd of May where there will be some preliminary testing including a typing test.

  3. Those further shortlisted after the Assessment Centre will be invited to attend a 1 hour behavioural panel interview.

  4. The next step in the process is an observation shift.

  5. Psychometric assessment, typing tests, and due diligence.

A thorough training and mentorship programme will provide the successful candidates with the skills and knowledge to undertake all key aspects of the role, including first aid, prioritizing calls, giving telephone advice and using the computerised triage system.

The anticipated commencement date is Monday, 5th of August.
